A Kinah on the VJWP
Just a post to feature one of my favorite items on VJWP: a kinah, or dirge, on the death of King George III. The poem was written by Hyman Hurwitz and was translated by “a friend.” The friend was none other Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Hurwitz’s neighbor. The poem was chanted in the Great Synagogue on the date of George III’s funeral. We also added another dirge, also composed by Hurwitz and translated by Coleridge–this was on the death of Princess Charlotte.
